Caveman

Caveman character I've designed for a cg society challenge, my friend Chad will be modelling him. I'm designing the comp for the actual finished illustration and will post that as I go.

Kermit and Monster Process

Here's some process images for painting Kermit and the monster. Painfully I had to paint about half of this twice because I forgot to save for quite awhile, which is unusual and then the power went off and on, oh well, save often right. Anyways, I blocked in my colour for the whole thing and began working on the large tree above the rocks on the right, then moved left through the background, then down the path to the rocks. I left the characters last and did them as I also touched up the whole piece at the same time. I always try to keep the entire piece in mind as I go, so lots of jumping around.

Kermit's Quest

So I composed a couple shots here after doing my landscape studies and added some characters. Decided on Kermit, I've been wanting to paint him for a while and so this just popped in mind. I'll post some stages of one them next.

Landscape Study Process

OK, I took this Photo form Corbis, lot's of photos there, sorry but I didn't grab the Photographers name so thank you Photographer whoever you are. So I sketch the photo roughly into my sketch book then scan it to Photoshop, delete the white of the page and turn the line art into a multiply layer. Then with the Photo open as well, I draw a new line layer with a dark brown colour and I'm ready to paint.I blast in some paint under the line layer, I try not to colour select from the photo cause I want my eye to interpret but sometimes I do it anyways just to see what my eye decided and what is actual there. So my colour is down and I begin rendering on a new top layer, On this one I work from the middle tree to the background and then to the forground and then all over the place, referring to the photo as I like. I don't care if it's exact, I chose this Photo cause of the lighting, I want to bring lighting like this into my work sometimes, so better study it. My next post is going to take some of what I learned in my landscape studies and compose my own image with a character.

Landscape Studies

Some landscape studies from photographs, I'll post a process for one shortly including the photo reference. I don't paint on the photo I just eye it and I try not to do colour grabs from it either cause I want my interpretations to come through. I used photos I found online but I don't know the actual photographers, so whoever they are thanks for posting your photos. Anyways, I've been doing these here and there to improve my BG vocabulary I think and my understanding of colour in general. I might try some photo mash ups as well after looking at the amazing work of Tom Scholes.

Crono

Crono sketch to finish. Not much to say here just a straight forward rendering of a character. I like Crono's design,  maybe cause he has superman's colours so my brain is at ease feeling safe with Crono. No I like his design cause it kinda has that cool anime thing without going all the way, it stays simple. All the Chrono trigger characters are pretty rad. I did drop a colour, I think his socks and sleeves are green and I didn't care for that but it's fine.

Red Hood

Painted drawing from my sketchbook, the freaking braid gave my brain lots of trouble for some reason or another, but sort of figured it out by the end.

Page 25 Finish

Finished. I work the image until I feel that it is clean enough and that enough seems to change now and then, my earlier pages for the first issue I believe are a little rougher, it just comes down to time per page I guess.

Painting page 25

The top image, I block in my colours beneath my line layer in Photoshop then I begin to render on a new layer above the line. The yellow ochre colour you can see in the edges is my bottom layer, I use the yellow because I like the colour and I don't mind if it comes through sometimes. I use to use other colours like a grey blue or purple, I guess pick a colour you'd like to perhaps come through.. So now I'm touching up the painting and will post the finish soon.

Pencils page 25

Here's a little bit of my drawing process. This is page 25 for issue 2 or chapter 2 of my web comic Orange. It's the last page, my first splash page as well. I wanted to show the size of the pumpkin headed Harvest King and figured what better way than using a whole page. So here he is about to eat a little ghost character, I thumbnailed his pose in my sketch book real quick, then went straight to the board. I roughed it out with blue col erase pencil, I draw loose and messy just searching for my shapes and masses. Then with a black sort of wax pencil I define the drawing quickly. Now it's scanned, assembled in Photoshop and I clean it up on a separate layer with a brush. I will delete the original drawing and blast in my colour beneath the line work and then finish the whole thing on a top layer. I'll post the colour process next.
